Toads have gotten a bad rap as being the less-popular relatives of frogs despite how often they've appeared in fantasy stories with Runaway Toad being another one. It spins the story of the princess and the frog on its head: Apparently, a princess in a tower has gotten obsessed with finding a prince and has captured numerous toads to achieve her dream. She's tried kissing all of them when it comes to the hero toad's turn, complete with a little crown. However, the toad takes advantage of a lightning strike to leap out of his captor's hands to safety and you've got to help him.
About Runaway Toad
There are many ways to design and play platforming games with a common tactic being to change how platforming controls work. This game does this by creating a slow-paced and more strategic adventure where all you can do is jump. This makes sense since you are a toad and if you've ever seen toads in the wild, they alternate between consistent and inconsistent hops depending on the situation. These are the kinds of movements you'll need to adapt to and feel the flow in order to see that this fantasy story has a happy ending. The princess won't be happy, but it'll be good for the toads.
How to Play
Runaway Toad is a 2D platform game that simulates swiping and tapping using only the mouse. To eat flies that you encounter, you click the Left Mouse Button where they're flying. To jump or hop, you click the Left Mouse Button and hold to charge your jump. A circular meter will appear to show the power of your jump and the toad will jump upon release. The goal is to get as far away from the princess tower as possible.
The toad will need to leap across rocks that will be placed at various distances ahead of him. Each of these rocks can be different shapes and sizes meaning that they'll require certain kinds of jumps. As such, the biggest obstacles are the gaps between the rocks. The lety you fall to the level below where the toad will be vulnerable. If the toad falls, a hawk will fly by and scoop him up to bring him back to the princess. This means you'll need to try another escape attempt.
By getting further and eating more flies, you can unlock different kinds of Toads. This menu will be marked by a large Toad icon on the menu screen.
Tips and Tricks
You're not actually controlling the jumps, but rather their power as the toad leaps forward. You can also do some practice runs to get a full feel for the jump arcs and physics. The arc line that appears when chagrin your jump is quite accurate so make use of it.
